ABC of Horror- Day 17- Q- Q- The Winged Serpent (1982)

In Larry Cohen’s film, an ancient Aztec winged reptilian creature has made their home on the top of the Chrysler Building in New York. Bungling criminal Jimmy Quinn is trying to hide after a botched robbery and uncovers the creature’s lair.

Q- The Winged Serpent is a doozy of a film. A homage to the monster movies of yore, special effects that have aged very well indeed and a cast (Michael Moriarty, David Carradine, Candy Clark and Richard Roundtree) to die for. The dialogue is also brilliant, with each character being fully sketched out and having their own idiosyncrasies.

But as this was made in the early 80s when horror was going through a very gory golden period, the kills are staged to represent this. The beheading scene is still a joy to behold.

Q is another entry in an already gleaming filmography and is arguably one of Cohen’s best films.
