Giallo in June- Day 18- Knife of Ice (1972)

A woman who is mute after a train crash that killed her parents, is stalked in the Spanish hills by a man with demonic eyes.

This Umberto Lenzi film is excellent. Carroll Baker is fantastic in the lead. Why is it that everything Ms Baker stars in though has a high quotient of camp?! Not that that’s a bad thing. She’s excellent as the mute victim and is very believeable. The camera loves her too and she reminds me of one of the blonde heroines Alfred Hitchcock let his cameras idolise (and rightly so). I think that Baker was hugely underrated and should have been similar in stature to either Tippi Hedren or Janet Leigh.

The ‘demonic’ eyes of the stalker reminded me, of course, of the eyes we see of The Devil in Rosemary’s Baby. And both films share similar themes.

Note to whoever misspelt the opening Edgar Allan Poe quote- there are two h’s in which.

Is the plot twist believeable? Nope. Does it matter? Nope- not when a film is still fun and holds your attention for it’s running time and also when it’s such a beautiful film.
