Giallo in June- Day 26- 7 Doors of Death (1983)

This film is a new edit of Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond for a North American release through a distribution company called Aquarius.

Whereas the extreme horror of the original would have undoubtedly ensured the dreaded X certificate in the States, this version effectively removed the gore so that an R could be granted. It worked.

And whilst the results are still passable, the guts of the film have been ripped out (pun not intended).

There are no eye-gougings, no shotgun blast through a characters skull so that scenery can be seen through it (really), no innovative kills whatsoever.

Growing up in the UK, it took a long time for me to see The Beyond uncut, but when I did I could fully appreciate the artistry of Fulci’s twisted visions.

My advice- see the original first, stick with the original and just watch this the once to compare and contrast.
