The Video Nasties Reviewed- Section 1- Day 21- Flesh For Frankenstein (1973)

This Andy Warhol (Paul Morrissey) adaptation of Mary Shelley’s morality tale involves Udo Kier’s Baron Frankenstein making a male and female creature who he wants to procreate and make a master race.

As with a lot of his other films, Warhol’s involvement as minimal with just the most perfunctory visits to set so that he didn’t get under Morrissey’s feet.

Flesh For Frankenstein must have surprised a lot of people who had seen Warhol’s (Morrissey’s) previous films such as Heat and Trash. This is a period piece that looks amazing and ‘passes’ if you will. This movie has just a fraction of Kenneth Branagh’s production but is infinitely more brilliant and more entertaining.

Udo Kier makes his second entry onto the Video Nasties list (now, that’s style!) and is perfect for this role. His Baron is manic, camp and completely over the top, a bit like the rest of the film.

The dialogue is just as out there and utterly brilliant. The gallbladder line has, quite rightly, gone down in film history.

Flesh For Frankenstein also has plenty of gore and almost a fetishistic love for it along with body parts and stitches. In other words, it’s perfect for a horror movie.

The film was originally made in 3D but this version only played in a couple of countries. Blood For Dracula followed hot on it’s heels.

As well as being placed on the Video Nasties list, the film was cut by the BBFC prior to its cinema release and was rated the dreaded X certificate in the US.
