The Video Nasties Reviewed- Section 1- Day 34- Night of the Demon (1980)

A man awakens in a hospital bed to tell of his ordeals against a Bigfoot-type creature that himself and the rest of the researchers he was with were investigating. None of his colleagues survived. The film then goes back in time to recall events.

Night of the Demon has bad acting, cheap effects and a monster that looks more like Chewbacca than Bigfoot.

But, it has only quality that many other horror films doesn’t- it’s fun. It’s also very scary and effective in generating scares and suspense. It’s pacing is also excellent. It’s as if they made the film, went over it and edited out any scenes that dragged or were seen as ‘filler’. Night of the Demon is a lean film that holds the attention.

There are also kills that are excellent. The castration scene (!) is fantastic and I’ll remember it the next time I want to piss in a bush. I also love the scene in which the beast pulls some intestines out of a victim and chooses to swing them around his head like a lasso. If these scenes don’t tempt you to check out this film, then you can always watch Gandhi instead.

These scenes are probably why Night of the Demon were placed on the DDP List. I’m glad that this film has earned its place in horror history because of this. It will gross out horror fans for decades to come.
