The Video Nasties Reviewed- Section 1- Day 36- SS Experiment Camp (1976)

Pervy goings-on in a concentration camp between hairy men and hairy women. The camp is run by Colonel von Kleiben who lost his testicles to a Russian woman and is looking for replacements.

Yes, that really is the plot.

SS Experiment Camp was massively controversial during the Video Nasties moral panic and was regularly named alongside The Evil Dead and Driller Killer as films that can corrupt the minds of the nation.

Whilst the video artwork (a nude woman suspended upside down and with a swastika nearby) was pushing boundaries and daring the authorities to have a clamp down, and with the plot outline being rather shocking, in actuality the film itself becomes kinda boring very quickly. It looks great and is camper than a row of pink tents. But the movie is very monotonal and gets kinda dull very quickly, even with the testicular transplant sub-plot (!)

There’s also a lot of pubic hair. Thank God landscaping became a thing

SS Experiment Camp’s infamy lives on. In 2008, with the BBFC stating that the film would be passed uncut (and slyly suggesting that it was the video packaging rather than the actual film that had got it into hot water), a couple of MP’s tried to get this decision reversed. One of these politicians was Keith Vaz, surely the last person to be dispensing morality (Google him).

Also, in 2021, the film was reported to be owned by a man convicted of terrorism charges and as being an alleged Far-Right sympathiser.

But, SS Experiment Camp is more high camp than concentration camp when it works, and a great cure for insomnia when it doesn’t.

It should never have been banned though. If the state is going to ban films for being distasteful my movie collection would be decimated.
