The Video Nasties Reviewed- The Dropped 33- Day 13- Frozen Scream (1975)

Two scientists try to master the tricky subect of immortality. But instead they create zombies who can only stay alive by staying cool.

Yes, that really is the plot. There are shots of the zombies recharging in deep freeze units.

Everything about Frozen Scream (geddit?!) is just as bonkers as the plot. The frankly bizarre voiceover, some of the cast members giving performances as if they’re hypnotised or heavily medicated, the sudden and jarring close-ups that happen within some shots (especially alarming when it’s an extreme close-up of someone’s face), the party scene in which everyone looks like they’re on acid (bonus marks to the guy who performs a backflip as one of his dance moves), the fact that all dialogue has been re-recorded in a studio but the dubbing isn’t aligned properly…the list is endless.

The soundtrack brilliantly veers between quietly sinister lounge music and more raucous moments that sound like a collaboration between Throbbing Gristle and Sonic Youth.

The Stepford Wives-esque ending is also worth seeing and allows for the possibility of a sequel. And this isn’t out of the question seeing how the majority of the film was made in 1975 but then finished off in 1981. That’s right- six years later! Genius can’t be rushed.

Frozen Scream is lo-fi, low budget and, some might say, amateurish. But it’s also a freaky cinematic curve-ball that has been, thankfully, immortalised on the Video Nasties list. It has character and is brilliant fun. I’ve never seen any other film like this. It’s a true one-off. And it’s sure to divide people. But I know I’m right.
