The Video Nasties Reviewed- The Dropped 33- Day 16- I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses (1978)

A woman, Magdalene (Elke Sommer) is shown being bludgeoned about the head. The rest of the film takes place in a courtroom in which her husband is on trial for the murder. Witnesses testify that the deceased had tried to get her husband bumped off and vice versa. But was her husband actually guilty of arranging for her to be murdered?

I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses is a Canadian film which is an oddity on the Video Nasties list, even though it was later removed from the list. It’s a courtroom drama resplendent with flashbacks rather than being a horror movie. The content that was responsible for it’s inclusion were the murders within the film which are very brutal. The use of bright red paint in these sequences was maybe employed to try and make these scenes look less realistic when it came time to have the film classified rather than solely for artisitic reasons. These are still brutal scenes as we see her killed by an unseen assailant and then by each of those accused during the course of the film. We also see a brutal murder and sexual assault by a mental hospital escapee.

I loved the character of the boxer/gangster, who when he is approached to kill the husband of the soon to be deceased explains, ‘I don’t kill people, I just break arms and legs!’ Oh, you big softee.

I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses is a solid hour and a half of entertainment. I also would never have seen this film if it wasn’t at one time classed as a Video Nasty. I’m also glad I saw it.
