The Video Nasties Reviewed- The Dropped 33- Day 24- Prisoner of the Cannibal God (1978)

Susan Stevenson (John Waters would be proud of that name) is trying to find her missing anthropologist husband. He was visiting Papua New Guinea and so Susan along with her brother and Professor Edward Foster go to try and find him. They venture to the mountain Ra Ra Me which is notorious for cannibalism.

Ahh, the 1970’s. I’m sure Ursula Andress and Stacy Keach thought they were signing up to some kind of exotic epic that would look incredible on the cinema screen. Instead, Prisoner of the Cannibal God was mostly seen on TV screens and would then be banned during the whole Video Nasties furore.

The film itself contains plenty of animal cruelty (always unnecessary) and gory kills. But, after the first 10 minutes of jungle locales and sunnier climbs, it becomes just kinda boring. Maybe it’s because I’m not a huge fan of these tribal cannibal horror movies or also because Prisoner of the Cannibal God is a very mediocre movie.

It’s kind of intriguing to see two well known stars in this kind of gritty pseudo-Grindhouse fare but thats it.

Fun fact- this film was distributed in the US by a new company called New Line. Whatever happened to them?!

Prisoner of the Cannibal God was also released as Slave of the Cannibal God.
