Astronauts return to Earth to find that World War 3 has taken place in their absence. Biological and nuclear warfare has obliterated Los Angeles. They have to contend with mutants and a gang of bandits led by Cutter (Sid Haig).

I remember The Aftermath when it was rereleased in 1988 as Zombie Aftermath and had fantastic video artwork which promised so much! Does it live up to this?

It’s tonally a very strange film. It feels like a TV special mixed with Star Trek and Planet of the Apes. Except there are kills that are very graphic and leave nothing to the imagination. Full marks to the special effects guy on this.

Sid Haig gives another over the top performance. He really is a mojor draw for this movie.

But the film is such an oddity that it doesn’t quite accomplish what the premise was aiming for. Also, the pacing is all over the place and feels very inconsistent.

A for ambition and effort but C for delivery. At least they tried though.
