The Video Nasties Reviewed- Section 3- Day 34- Headless Eyes (1971)

An artist, Arthur, is robbing a woman’s apartment. She is asleep on her bed but the noise he’s making wakes her up. All she can find to defend herself is a spoon (!) which she uses to gouge one of his eyes out with.

With now only one eye, Arthur becomes obsessed with gouging out women’s eyes so that he can use them in his artistic endeavours.

This 1971 is perfect for Drive-In audiences (the gore) but also arthouse audiences (the film has a very experimental feel to it which may be in some scenes intentional and in others just a result of inexperience making a film). So, we get lots of eyeballs and gougings (which is cool) but also shots including extreme close-ups that remind me of the Nouvelle Vague and the Warhol/Morrissey films (also cool).

Headless Eyes is a good piece of horror fare and it’s relatively short running time makes it feel like there’s very little filler here.

Fun fact- the director of this opus is the father of Justine and Jason Bateman.
