The Video Nasties Reviewed- Section 3- Day 44- The Love Butcher (1975)

Women are being killed with gardening implements. Could the suspect be Caleb, the goofy, odd looking gardener who suffers from multiple personalities and regularly adopts the identity of his much better looking brother, Lester who died previously?

The Love Butcher is batshit crazy and great fun because if it. There’s a rich vein of zaniness to proceedings that works really well. Think Herschell Gordon Lewis and Russ Meyer teaming up to rip-off Hitchcock’s Psycho and you’re half-way there.

I love the transformation of Caleb, the nerdy oddball (he gets called a ‘cripple’ numerous time throughout the films running time which isn’t very nice) into Lester, the tanned disco super stud. The use of wigs in this film is exemplary. It’s a very funny performance by Erik Stern (James Lemp).

One of a kind and well worth unearthing which has been made easier because of the label Code Red.

Co-director Don Jones has another film on the Section 3 list, Abducted and would go on to direct the excellent 1982 slasher movie, The Forest.
