The Video Nasties Reviewed- Section 3- Day 53- The New Adventures of Snow White (1969)

This West German film provides an ‘erotic’ spin on the tales of Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. It’s also titled Grimm’s Fairy Tales For Adults in some countries.

These are filmed adaptations of the fairy tales but made for adults and with added nudity (this was made as an adult film) and imagery suitable for mature audiences (an example is the snake slithering over the naked Snow White’s sleeping body. What could it mean?!)

But The New Adventures of Snow White isn’t just for the dirty mac brigade. It also works for the Drive-In audiences also as this was made in 1969 and so we get trippy imagery and a colour palette that can bring tears to your eyes. The cast and crew must have had access to top-notch LSD during the making of this film. There are toadstools aplenty in this film (again, what does it mean?!)

And it’s because of this that I quite enjoyed it. I got serious Beyond the Valley of the Dolls vibes from the colour scheme. I love a film in which characters have red and blue hair.

There’s also a very questionable scene with a bear which reminded me of Walerian Borowczyk’s The Beast.

This epic was made by director Rolf Thiele who was seen as a mainstream filmmaker before this. But not after (unsurprisingly).

Hallucinatory, dark in places and soaked in acid. This is worth experiencing at least once.
