The Video Nasties Reviewed- Section 3- Day 69- Street Killers (1977)

Sadistic killer Nanni Vitali escapes from prison with three accomplices. They embark on an orgy of murder, kidnapping, r*pe and violence. However, police inspector Giulio Santini is hot on their heels.

Street Killers aka The Mad Dog Killer is a Eurocrime film that is very violent indeed (an indcation why it features on the Section 3 list) and doesn’t pull it’s punches (pun not intended). It’s also another example of how stylish and genuinely beautifully directed films within this genre can be even though they were intended as the cinematic equivalent of a pulp crime novel.

And speaking of pulp fiction, Street Killers is briefly seen in Tatantino’s film, Jackie Brown. Robert de Niro and Bridgit Fonda’s characters even talk about it.

I love the fact that some of the car chases were obviously sped up rather than the cars just driven really fast as the film dictates. I kept hearing the Benny Hill theme tune whenever I saw these sequences.

This may not be an essential slice of Eurocrime, but it’s still gritty as hell, mean as fuck and a very good piece of sleazy Eurocrime fun.
