The Video Nasties Reviewed- Section 3- Day 77- The Toy Box (1971)

Ralph and Donna are on their way to visit ‘Uncle’ who is throwing a very special kind of party for his guests.

Section 3 takes a sharp left into the soft-focus world of the soft-core p*rno genre here, known in cult film parlance as ‘s*xploitation’.

We get to see the gift Ralph bought Donna years before (let’s just say it’s a different type of toy) and what happens when she used it (ahem).

This is all very camp with garish lighting, hilarious dialogue (the voiceover is too funny) and, as this was made in 1971, more pubic hair than you would ever want to see ever again.

But there’s also a sinister undertone to proceedings. The ‘uncle’ in question just happens to be a corpse. And a corpse who can talk. I’m guessing some serious narcotics were consumed during this production. This corpse character instantly reminded me of Grandpa from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

There also a scene in which nude ‘feral’ women are led in on chains and on all fours. I’m wondering if Joel M Reed saw this before he made the masterpiece Bloodsucking Freaks.

Add to this a healthy dose (pun not intended) of Russ Meyer and you have a film for those who love the bizarre and surreal.

Weird, wonderful and very far-out. The guy who photographed this film went on to photograph David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. A natural progression, you might say.
