The Video Nasties Reviewed- Anomalies- Day 6- Blood For Dracula (1974)

Count Dracula is ill as he needs v*rgin blood but can’t find any. He decides to travel to Italy where he learns of a family which includes four daughters. The family is broke and so they think a Count might bring them a few quid if he marries into the family and so the arrangement is mutually beneficial but for very different reasons.

As this is an Andy Warhol production, you can expect things to be on the more extreme side when it comes to a film depicting Dracula.

And it doesn’t disappoint! There’s inc*st, communism (!), full frontal nudity, graphic (but actually tastefully staged) s*x scenes and lesbianism to name just a few ingredients.

The ending has to be seen to be believed and should be enjoyed by any horror fan. As does the blood soaked bread scene.

I love the fact that the Count has a major obstacle in his way to finding a v*rgin and that’s Joe Dallesandro! And Joe is at his alpha male prime here. I love the contrast between Joe’s thick Noo Yawk accent to Udo Kier’s Transylvanian brogue that turns every ‘v’ into a ‘w’.

In fact, Kier’s Dracula appears to be a proto-Goth pin-up here with his razor-sharp bone structure and fab black wardrobe.

This is an interesting, gory, camp and thoroughly entertaining telling of the Dracula tale.
