What A Carry On!- Day 25- Carry On Girls (1973)

From IMDB- ‘Sidney Fiddler organizes a beauty contest for a seaside town, but faces opposition from Councillor Prodworthy, who leads a women’s liberation group aiming to sabotage the competition through disruption tactics.’

Neither Kenneth Williams or Charles Hawtrey feature here as the former had stage commitments and the latter was in the grasp of alcohol addiction which made him unreliable.

This is also the first Carry On film to require cuts from the BBFC to gain an A certificate due to its risqué nature.

The BFI named Carry On Girls as one of the five worst of the series.

Is it that bad? No, frankly. Yet again, the series is brave enough to move with the times and portray two controversial issues- women’s beauty contests and the emerging Women’s Liberation movement. Both had their supporters and detractors in the 70’s. Carry On Girls sees the comedy that can be gained from both issues and how each going up against each other could also be very funny. What’s more, the men in the film are ridiculed more than the feminists or contestants.

I actually really liked the more blatantly s*xual jokes that are apparent right from the outset. I wonder if Julian Clary has seen this film…

We also get another seaside setting and another chaotic ending. And both are fantastic. One can only imagine if Messrs. Williams and Hawtrey had been involved with proceedings.

One of the worst Carry Ons? You’re avin a laugh!
