What A Carry On!- Day 30- Carry On Emmannuelle (1978)

Emmannuelle Prevert is the wife of French ambassador, Emile Prevert. As he has more interests in keeping fit, Emmannuelle seeks to satisfy her desires with lots of men across London.

This was the Carry On I was most intrigued by and, perversely, the film from the series I wanted to investigate the most. Is it really as bad as people say?

Now that I’ve seen it, all I can say is that it was, erm, an experience.

The only good thing about the Carry On team taking on the task of making a parody. of this kind of material is that it serves as a reminder of when these kind of films were popular in Britain. Otherwise, it was such a silly choice of genre to base a film on.

Even Kenneth Williams said in his diaries that he thought a lot of the screenplay was dreadful. And he’s right and he’s also terribly miscast here. The idea of him as a bodybuilding (and clearly utterly deluded) husband of a nymphomaniac is funny (for a nanosecond) on paper but on film it just doesn’t work.

Suzanne Danielle has all of the charisma of a used tea-bag. Her ‘acting’ ability would be better suited to the kind of films she’s lambasting here.

Several other regulars feature here (Kenneth Connor deserves special mention as his role is especially cringeworthy) and we’re even treated to Beryl Reid who still has her dignity intact after starring in this abomination.

They spelt Emmannuelle with the extra n to avoid a lawsuit from the makers of the original films. I would have sued them anyway after seeing this.

There is a funny sequence in which our slutty leading lady is trying and failing to get a Grenadier Guard to react whilst in front of a fake background. Shortly afterwards a gay man succeeds. Let’s just say that there’s another layer of meaning here as it was well known that a lot of the real life guards were actually gay. I wonder if Kenneth Williams wrote this scene.

Carry On Emmannuelle has a great poster but is an AWFUL film in actuality. John Waters said he loved the sequels that were so bad that they halted a franchise in its tracks. I wonder if he loves this film…

I’m ’looking forward’ to seeing which is worse- Emmannuelle or Columbus.
