Amityville Reviewed- Day 7- Amityville: The New Generation (1993)

A young photographer is given a mirror by a homeless man. Chaos ensues.

The twists and turns of this franchise! I wasn’t expecting a film based around young arty types living a somewhat (for a glossy early 90’s film) bohemian life. With this setting there are, of course, comparisons to be made with Driller Killer but whereas Ferrera’s film was gritty, uncompromising and akin to licking a urinal, this Amityville entry is more like an episode of the Friday the 13th TV show crossed with Dawson’s Creek.

Is it any good? It’s, well, OK. It held my interest well enough but it’s pretty average.

There’s a great cast featuring actors well known from other better cult films (Richard Roundtree, David Naughton, Terry O’Quinn, Lin Shaye).

There’s also a great ending which I’ll spoil for you now. The lead is about blow his friends brains out in the middle of his art show but then decides not to even though he’s fired a few shots from his rifle. The spectators from the art world who are watching think this is all part of the performance and start applauding! I thought that was darkly amusing.

Watch this if it crops up on TV but don’t go out of your way to seek it out.
