Universal Classic Monsters Reviewed- Day 12- Son of Frankenstein (1939)

From IMDB- ‘Returning to the ancestral castle long after the death of the monster, the son of Dr. Frankenstein meets a mad shepherd who is hiding the comatose creature. To clear the family name, he revives the creature and tries to rehabilitate him.’

Any film that stars Basil Rathbone, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff has to be good.

And it is! Bags of atmosphere, a sombre tone but an undercurrent of bleak humour too (largely due to the character Ygor). The score is also brilliantly eerie.

It was a strange coincidence that I watched a horror film that starts with a very impressive thunderstorm as a pretty impressive thunderstorm was taking place outside my window. Nature provided the atmos for me.

Do you remember when horror sequels were good? This film is a great reminder.
