Universal Classic Monsters Reviewed- Day 16- The Invisible Woman (1940)

A model, Kitty Carroll, is the first guinea pig for a machine which can turn people invisible which has been invented by the eccentric Professor Gibbs. But the machine is then stolen by three gangsters who want to use it on their boss.

This isn’t horror even though it’s the third film in their ‘invisible’ series of films. It’s more screwball comedy.

The big question amongst film fans seems to be the special effects with some hating them. I didn’t, and found that whilst they’re very much of their time, they are also very endearing. This is a film from 1940! They must have been highly thought of at the time as they were nominated for a Special Effects Academy Award.

The cast is very good with great performances of well written characters (do you remember when films did that?!) Virginia Bruce and John Barrymore deserve special recognition as the two leads.

A pleasant non-horror and very charming experience.
