Universal Classic Monsters Reviewed- Day 28- House of Dracula (1945)

From IMDB- ‘Dracula arrives at Dr. Edelman’s office asking for a cure to his vampirism, but this is a ruse by Dracula to get near Dr. Edelman’s beautiful female assistant and turn her into a vampire. Meanwhile, a sincere Lawrence Talbot, AKA the Wolfman, arrives seeking a cure for his lycanthropy. When Dr. Edelman’s first attempt fails, Talbot tries to do away with himself by jumping off a cliff, but instead finds a network of underground caves where Frankenstein’s Monster is in stasis. Chaos ensues as the three monsters fight for dominance of one another.’

As you can read by the plot outline, this is another Universal ‘all for the price of one’ horror vehicle that (hopefully) translates into healthy box office and popcorn sales.

All performances are solid and the soundtrack is also very good. This is yet another atmospheric Universal horror film (the genres equivalent of sucking on a Werthers Original when it comes to comfort).

I find the ‘please cure me’ angle, even though it been used before, it’s very interesting and (still) offers a new dimension to such fare.

I also find it amusing how other horror superstar characters are introduced into the plot (the caves where Frankenstein is discovered in).

House of Dracula isn’t going to blow anyone away due to its staggering originality or innovation. But if you want a horror film from yesteryear that still entertains, this might be for you if you’re flicking between multiple TV channels and can’t find anything suitable to watch.
