Universal Classic Monsters Reviewed- Day 30- Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)

Abbott and Costello are freight-handlers who just so happen to welcome Dracula and a weakened Frankenstein into America en route to McDougall’s House of Horrors. The Count wants one of their brains to revitalise The Monster. Alas, they have The Wolf Man on their side.

I only like horror and comedy together in the same film when the components of both genre deliver well. An example of this is An American Werewolf in London. An example that failed to deliver on both fronts is Wes Craven’s Scream.

Thankfully, this Abbott and Costello film handsomely delivers with the horror stars playing it straight and the comedy stars being their wacky, zany loveable selves.

This is one of the best horror comedies I’ve ever seen and is surprisingly atmospheric so it fully fits into the series so far.

And to think that the comedy stars weren’t sure about the script and whether it was good enough before they started filming. It turned out to be one of the most successful Universal films of that year.
