Day 14- 31 Days of Halloween 2023- Krishna Cottage (2004)

When Disha, a new student, joins JC College this proves to be very disruptive. Not only with the male students (she is very attractive and even the lead character who is engaged to someone else has his head turned) but also because unexplained and somewhat sinister things start to happen. Cars inexplicably breaking down, tyres bursting into flames, chandeliers falling down…Does Disha have something to do with this?!

When a group of friends’ vehicle breaks down, they are forced to spend the night in Krishna Cottage. And then the supernatural shit really starts.

Bollywood horror films tend to be very frustrating. They’re Bollywood (hooray!) so we get all the great stuff like song and dance routines and comedy etc. But they’re not really horror. If you approach them with this knowledge, you should still be entertained though.

I was struck by just how modern this Hindu film was with an eye-watering colour palate and characters who looked more like players from an Indian version of Sweet Valley High more than anything else. It was Bollywood but also very Westernised.

Like some teen horror films there’s also the drama. This reminded me of the 80’s slasher films in which some of them used this in their advertising and trailers/TV spots. The trailers that emphasised the drama were stereotypically meant to draw in the girls, whilst the murders/horror were meant to bring male members of the cinema-going public to see the film.

And so as well as the supernatural shenanigans, we get the soap opera-esque goings-on involving the engaged couple quarrelling over the male’s (Manav) roving eye, whilst the female (Shanti) intends to have it out with her new competition (Disha).

This isn’t the worst Bollywood film I’ve ever seen. This isn’t the worst horror film I’ve ever seen. But it’s not the best of either genre either. This is solid, but not much more.

2 and a half out of 5 stars.
