You may remember at the end of the excellent Evil Dead 2 that our hero Ash was transported back in time. This is where the franchise’s third entry takes place, the year 1300 to be precise.

I remember that this film coincided with the UK finally getting a severely cut version of the first film released. God bless the BBFC.

This third entry still has its horror elements with echoes of the first two films which will delight fans of the series. But this also works just as brilliantly as an action comedy flick and has catchphrases galore. I also loved the Ray Harryhausen-esque skeletons.

All in all, this is a fantastic film which never fails to entertain. It’s also great that the film is (mostly) CGI-free and hence isn’t some vile soulless affair (although nothing Sam Raimi directed would be devoid of character and passion).

Gory, visceral and oh-so funny.
