Johnny Finger (!) aka The Rumpo Kid rides into Stodge City and instantly causes chaos by killing three strangers. He also demands alcohol at the local saloon which shocks the tee-total mayor. He *then* kills the sheriff. Can a ‘sanitation engineer first-class’ (ie plumber) from Merry Old England solve this lawless situation?

Kenneth Willaims praised Carry On Cowboy in his diaries, saying that he thought it was a success on every level.

Whilst I thought the film was very entertaining and it held my attention, I just had one major drawback and that is that I just can’t stand Westerns. The humour here is more hit than miss and it’s great to see some of the regular cast members taken out of their comfort zone and adhering to genre conventions such as applying accents that would be normally heard in a Western film. Some have said that they hated this and that the accents ruined the film for them but they didn’t really bother me that much.

There should be special mention paid to cast mambers Jim Dale, Kenneth Williams and Angela Douglas as Annie Oakley, all of whom gave fantastic performances and seemingly had a ball in this quite far removed Carry On entry.

As entertaining as this was, this wouldn’t be one of my ‘go-to’ Carry On films though but because of the genre rather than the production or actors.
