George A Romero Reviewed- Day 8- Knightriders (1981)

‘A medieval reenactment troupe struggles to maintain its family-like dynamic amid pressure from local authorities, interest from talent agents, and their “King’s” delusions of grandeur.’

A genuinely quirky and original idea (and not horror!) is delivered by Romero in this low-key gem. This was a labour of love for him (read how the set was destroyed by a storm one night in the excellent book ‘The Zombies That Ate Pittsburgh’).

Ed Harris is on fine form as Billy (aka The King) who refuses to sell out the Renaissance fare riders.

I love the fusion of the old (knights of the realm) with the new (they ride awesome motorbikes instead of steads). Some reviewers online have said that this film gave birth to their lifelong love of motorcycles. Which can’t be a bad thing.

Knightriders is also another example of a film that some people say is too long (2.5 hours) but which I found to be a walk (or ride) in the park. Many films are longer nowadays anyway.
