The Video Nasties Reviewed- Section 3- Day 45- Mad Foxes (1981)

Hal is taking a lady friend to a nightclub in his sports car. They are set upon by a Hell’s Angels gang. During the chase that ensues, a gang member is killed. Later that night when Hal and his date leave the club they are ambushed by the gang who beat him up and r*pe his date. This sets in motion revenge by Hal on the gang.

Wow. This film! This Spanish exploitation movie turns everything up to eleven and then some. The filmmakers must have had a production meeting early on in which they said, ‘If they want an extreme film, that’s what they’ll get!’

There’s nudity, both male and female and full-frontal, gore (internal organs are spilled in some of the stabbing scenes, one of which involves a woman stabbed in, erm, I can’t tell you here!), Nazi symbolism (the gang wear swastikas but only during the indoors scenes as Spain has banned their display outdoors), loads of s*x scenes (to the extent that this almost feels like soft-core p*rn)…

The r*pe scene isn’t overlong but it certainly pushes boundaries (if you’ve seen the film, you’ll certainly know what I’m talking about).

There are obvious references to A Clockwork Orange with the gang and the visuals reminded me of The Warriors with its gaudy, colourful style being like a (very adult) comic strip which has been made into a film. There are also Last House on the Left vibes with the scenes involving the biker gang discovering where Hal’s family lives.

Mad Foxes was, unsurprisingly, cut for cinema release. It was this cut version that was released on video but this didn’t exempt it from being placed in Section 3 of the Video Nasties list.

I thought the film was excellent. Yes, it’s extreme but this is a cult film and not a romcom. Will this ever be released uncut here in the UK? Not any time soon!

If you want a film that pulls no punches and will shock even the most jaded cult film fan, give it a go.

It also holds the distinction of the film’s producer being so appalled at what he saw in the finished film that he disowned it and asked for his name not to appear in the credits. Now that’s style.

4 out of 5 stars
