A young couple move from France to an isolated villa in Romania. This proves to be a bad move though as things quickly take a turn for the worse as they find themselves under attack.

Beautifully photographed, brilliantly directed (loving the POV shots that place you in the shoes of the protagonists), Them (released as Ils in France) is a pretty good horror movie.

But does it deserve to be part of a list of the 100 Most Shocking Films of All Time? Certainly not. Yes, it’s tense and thankfully doesn’t overstay its welcome (it’s only 75 minutes long), but it references other films that do this so much better. It reminded me of The Haunting, Halloween, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Bloody Birthday to name but a few but isn’t in the same league.

The shock reveal at the end wasn’t delivered as well as it could have been. The same goes for the last scene featuring one of the characters being pursued. I felt ever so slightly undersold probably because the film’s middle act consisted mainly of the protagonists running and hiding.

But it’s a good film if not great and is well worth checking out.
