An unstable children’s author finds the hallucinations that engulf her life are becoming out of control as she stays in her vacation home. What is fact and what is fiction?

I had never heard of Images before and was surprised to discover that it was directed by Robert Altman.

An impressive cast is led by Susannah York who gives a truly brilliant performance. In fact, she won that year’s Cannes Film Festival award for Best Actress and it was utterly well deserved.

John Williams’ score (with ‘sounds’ by Stomu Yamash’ta) is like nothing I think I’ve ever heard. It consists of obscure, unsettling sounds that completely suit the action.

In fact, the whole film is unsettling, paranoid and darkly hypnotic. The Irish locales help this immeasurably. The photography is beautiful courtesy of Vilmos Zsigmond.

Notice how Susannah York plays a character called Cathryn and the actress Cathryn Harrison plays a character called Susannah. Also, the book Ms York is reciting in her head throughout the film is actually a book she wrote in real life called In Search of Unicorns which ties in with the jigsaw puzzle in the film. The cast and crew are playing with our minds.

A brilliant, little known gem.
