Shocking Cinema- Day 57- Frontier(s) (2007)

Young criminals with a stash of stolen money seek refuge after violent clashes following a controversial election result. They board at a hotel run by a very strange ensemble of people.

Yet again, we have a French extreme horror film from the noughties that is another slice of ‘try-hard’ cinema.

Disposable, cheap cinematography, the kind of narrative that is designed to shock (but doesn’t) and not one likeable character. This feels more like an advertising executive’s idea of what’s edgy, wild or controversial rather than being original or having any substance whatsoever.

Also, you can pinch loads of elements from both The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Salò if you want but still make a turkey of a film. Here’s your proof.

If I hadn’t already seen Martyrs, I would have written off the French Extreme sub-genre as utterly vacuous and a waste of time judging by rubbish like this.
