Review- Rocky (1976)

On December 28, 2022December 28, 2022 By Meathook CinemaIn Film, Film ReviewLeave a comment

I rewatched Rocky today for the first time in like decades! It was one of the first movies we rented when my parents bought our first VCR. Oh, I loved those huge padded Warner Brothers video cases! It’s such a simple premise but one which clearly struck a chord with audiences. A small-time, part-time boxer …

Review- Reanimator (1985)

On December 26, 2022 By Meathook CinemaIn Film, Film ReviewLeave a comment

I rewatched Reanimator again today for the first time in years. The memories came flooding back... I originally saw it a few years after it was originally released here in the UK as there was a (cut) midnight screening at a soulless multiplex near my house in the late 80's. I phoned my friend to …

Review- Orca The Killer Whale (1977)

On December 25, 2022 By Meathook CinemaIn Film, Film ReviewLeave a comment

Don’t mess with nature. I love the Jaws clones that star big names who were only involved for the pay cheque. In fact, this film foreshadowed the masterpiece that is Jaws The Revenge by about ten years. Surprisingly entertaining. Loving the Ennio Morricone score and theme song. 3 out of 5 stars

Review- The Howling 3 (1988)

On December 22, 2022December 23, 2022 By Meathook CinemaIn Film, Film ReviewLeave a comment

I first saw The Howling 3 in 1989 on home video and thought ‘What the hell was that?!’ I saw it again today and again thought ‘What the hell was that?!’ The film is a curio for sure. It bears no relation (except by name) to the other films in the franchise and feels more …

Review- The Color of Money (1986)

On December 15, 2022 By Meathook CinemaIn Film, Film ReviewLeave a comment

I have a confession to make. Even though I’m a huge Scorsese fan, I had never seen The Color Of Money. That was resolved last night. Superb direction, uniformly amazing performances (only an auteur like Scorsese could obtain such a restrained turn from Tom Cruise) and a fantastic screenplay. Great to see Iggy Pop too. …

Review- Fatal Attraction (1987)

On December 15, 2022December 15, 2022 By Meathook CinemaIn Film, Film ReviewLeave a comment

I watched Fatal Attraction yesterday for the first time since I first saw it in the late 80’s on home video. The film ranges from being a brilliantly directed New York flick to being a thinly drawn slasher movie. I loved the shots of Alex (Glenn Close) when she’s in full psycho mode wearing her …

Review- Death Wish 4: The Crackdown

On December 13, 2022 By Meathook CinemaIn Film, Film Review2 Comments

After his girlfriend's daughter dies at the hands of drug pushers, Paul Kersey decides to take down the whole crime network that supplied the drugs to her. This leads to him taking on the local Mafia. OK, so this isn't too different from the plot-lines of previous entries in the franchise, but it's still VERY …

Review- Long Weekend (1978)

On December 12, 2022 By Meathook CinemaIn Film2 Comments

A massively dysfunctional couple decide to go Bush in their native Australia to try and salve their relationship. However, it appears that nature and the local ecology doesn't take kindly to two bickering and slobbish human beings invading and polluting their environ and decides to fight back. This is a terrific slice of Ozploitation with …

Top 10 Bubbling Under Films

On December 11, 2022December 11, 2022 By Meathook CinemaIn FilmLeave a comment

As with any lists containing my favourite films, I always think of films I should have included or those that just missed out on being in the big Top 10. I thought these needed to be acknowledged too so, without further a do, here are the next (or should that be another) 10 in descending …

Inspired by Sight and Sound's Greatest Films of All Time, I have compiled my Top 10 Films of All Time. For ages I've known what my Top 5 films have been but I've had to have a bit of a think as to the other entries. But, I'm happy with my other choices although there …
