George A Romero Reviewed- Day 14- Bruiser (2000)

Henry Creedlow has some very toxic people in his life- his wife is having an affair with his boss, his best friend is vile and stealing his investments …even his pet poodle hates him. Then he wakes up to find that his face has been replaced by a featureless white mask. He uses this newly found anonymity to enact revenge against the toxic people in his life.

Bruiser epitomises what I love about Romero’s filmography. It’s full of hidden gems and interesting oddities like this.

A genuinely interesting and off-beat concept (I kept thinking of Metamorphosis by Kafka), great performances and Romero’s brilliant direction.

We even get a Misfits cameo.

Bruiser is also a great metaphor for losing your identity within modern society.

Criminally, this was released straight to video back in the day. I’d love to see it on the big screen.
