Shocking Cinema- Day 43- Santa Sangre (1989)

‘A former circus artist escapes from a mental hospital to rejoin his armless mother – the leader of a strange religious cult – and is forced to enact brutal murders in her name as he becomes “her arms”.’

Talk about generic plots! This is an Alejandro Jodorowsky film, you know, the man who made El Topo, so expect the unexpected.

I actually watched this movie because of its gorgeous Graham Humphries UK video artwork, and I’m glad I did.

Santa Sangre is as beautiful, mind-expanding and insane as Jodorowsky’s earlier films that entertained midnight movie audiences the world over. But it’s also, incredibly, his most accessible work.

Bask in the photography, insane plot, startling imagery and gorgeous colour palette. Some images will stay with you and enter your mind like the cinematic version of an earworm. Amputation was never captured so beautifully on film.
